Winter does not need to compromise healthy eating. When you visit us in the winter you can still expect to fill your grocery basket with a variety of fresh produce. Yes, despite the snow and chilly temperatures, tasty, nutritious, LOCAL, greens are still growing! Our selection usually includes spinach, lettuces, kales (red, green or dino), chard, collards, bok choy, dandelion, beet greens, green onions, radishes, cilantro, parsley, mint and a variety of spicy greens sold as a mix or individually: arugula, red mustard, tatsoi, mizuna, red russian kale and cress. Our `signature’ salad item is our “Mixed Salad Greens.” This is a delightful mix of baby lettuces, spinach and spicy greens, enhanced with select herbs, washed and ready to eat ~ how convenient for a busy work week! Although it’s an attractive mix on its own, you can also garnish it with our edible nasturtium salad flowers.
We grow tomatoes in our greenhouse from early Spring through to early Winter – allowing us to extend the season on this all-time favourite vegetable (or fruit to be more accurate!) “Sun Gold” Cherry tomatoes and Heirloom “Grightmires Pride” are 2 of our main varieties. The first much-sought-after ripe fruits are usually ready to harvest by the end of May.
We have both unheated and heated greenhouses. The unheated greenhouse extends the harvest season on both Spring and Fall ends. The wood heated greenhouse keeps plants going through the coldest temperatures of winter. By February with its longer days and often times brilliantly sunny days, we think of the greenhouses as our winter escape to a warm, sunny land where we can be barefoot in the sweet earth.
